Why Millennials are Flocking to BOTOX®

Posted on April 24, 2022

You may think of Botox® as a treatment for your parents. But if you’re in your 20s or 30s, chances are your friends are fans, too. Millennials are flocking to Botox not to erase wrinkles, but to prevent them from forming in the first place. Used for cosmetic purposes since the 1990s, Botox is the most requested treatment for decreasing fine lines and wrinkles — and increasingly for preventing them as well.

If you start treatments in your 20s or 30s, Botox can help prevent frown lines and crow’s feet from developing. Laura Bilbruck, MD and our nurse injector, Renee Reed, RN, BSN, at Results Medical Aesthetics & Wellness in Tulsa, Oklahoma, explain how the treatment works and why you should consider adding it to your regular beauty routine.

How Botox helps prevent wrinkles

Wrinkles develop from repeated muscle contractions that crease the skin. The collagen and moisture in your skin keep it flexible and resilient. However, over time the crease marks on your skin become permanent. Botox is a neurotoxin that works by temporarily blocking the nerve signals that cause your facial muscles to contract. Administering small amounts of this protein at strategic points in your face causes specific muscles to relax, smoothing out wrinkles and fine lines.

When Botox injections are administered to skin that is wrinkle-free, it prevents them from forming by inhibiting the muscle contractions that create them. Frequently, patients who use Botox for wrinkle prevention require fewer injections as they age.

Facial wrinkles that Botox helps prevent

Wrinkles first appear around the eyes. Every smile and squint causes the small muscles at the sides of your eyes to contract. As a result, these repeated muscle movements leave “crow’s feet” wrinkles at the outer corners of your eyes. Similarly, repeated frowning leads to permanent creases in your forehead and between your eyebrows.

Is Botox safe?

No medically administered cosmetic treatment is more researched than Botox. It’s approved for cosmetic use in 78 countries with a high satisfaction rate and millions of repeat customers.

When scheduling Botox injections, it’s important to let our medical team know about your health history, as well as all prescription and nonprescription drugs you are using.

How does Botox compare to Xeomin and Jeuveau?

Years ago, Botox was the only neuromodulator of its kind. And it’s remained a perennial favorite because of its safety and effectiveness. But there are some new products on the market that give you more options.

In the same way that multiple TV manufacturers make their own versions of the same type of television, and several cola makers produce similar beverages, neuromodulators now come from more than one source.

At Results Medical Aesthetics & Wellness, we now offer Jeuveau and Xeomin as well as Botox. Here’s how they compare:

Botox

  • Active ingredient: onabotulinumtoxinA
  • FDA approved for cosmetic and therapeutic uses
  • Long, proven track record
  • Lasts up to four months

Jeuveau

  • Active ingredient: prabotulinumtoxinA-xvfs
  • Most similar to Botox formulation
  • Great for crow’s feet and fine lines
  • Lasts four to six months

Xeomin

  • Active ingredient: IncobotulinumtoxinA
  • FDA approved for cosmetic uses, especially frown lines and between-brow furrows
  • No additives, which may prevent tolerance development
  • Lasts up to six months

Dr. Bilbruck can help you decide which is the best choice of injectable neuromodulator for your aesthetic goals.

A conservative approach

The Botox procedure entails customized injections for patients regardless of age. Results are immediate and last three to six months.

However, when preventing wrinkles, known as prejuvenation, the dosage is smaller than what’s required for treating existing lines, rejuvenation. Younger patients need fewer injections using a smaller amount of Botox to keep results looking natural.

For a growing number of Millennials, regular Botox appointments are part of their ongoing skincare routine. If you’re considering Botox injections for the prevention of wrinkles, contact us at Results Medical Aesthetics & Wellness for a consultation today.
