What is Botox?

Botox, or botulinum toxin, is a popular, FDA-approved injectable cosmetic treatment created to reduce or smooth facial wrinkles. The most common treatment areas include facial wrinkles such as forehead lines, frown lines, and crow’s feet, but it can also be used off-label to treat other areas of the face and jaw. Botox injections are a form of purified botulinum toxin injections that work by temporarily blocking the chemical signals in the nerves that tell facial muscles to contract, resulting in smoother, more youthful-looking skin. Botox treats wrinkles called dynamic wrinkles, which are caused by muscle activity and facial expressions that crease the skin over a lifetime, eventually becoming permanent. It’s often combined with dermal fillers, which are another popular non-surgical treatment.

Botox is a prescription medicine, meaning only skilled and qualified injectors can administer it. Patients in their 20s can also benefit from Botox by using it as a preventive treatment, reducing the development of deep lines and wrinkles in the first place.

WHAT CAN BOTOX TREAT?

Botox injections have been used for decades to treat medical conditions such as cervical dystonia, lower limb spasticity, chronic migraine, and more. However, Botox is most well known as a cosmetic treatment for facial wrinkles. In fact, it’s one of the most effective options for moderate to severe signs of aging such as frown lines, crow’s feet lines, and forehead lines. We often pair Botox Cosmetic injections with hyaluronic acid fillers for a more complete anti-aging result, but it can be incredibly effective on its own.

Who is a Candidate?

Individuals 18 years and older who wish to smooth unwanted lines and wrinkles can often benefit from Botox injections. Ideal candidates are those who are not pregnant or breastfeeding, do not have a history of neuromuscular disease, and are overall healthy. You should not receive this treatment if you have an active infection in the treatment area or certain health conditions. Botox Treatment

Prior to your Botox treatment, an initial consultation is needed with Dr. Bilbruck for a proper evaluation. She will create a personalized treatment plan for you to address your aesthetic goals, as well as review any medical conditions, previous allergic reactions, and desired results.

Just before treatment, you will be offered a topical numbing cream to ensure that you are comfortable during treatment. However, many people do not require this, as a very fine needle is used during treatment. Botox will then be strategically injected into the appropriate areas to achieve desired results. Botox injection treatment is quick, taking about 10-20 minutes to complete. You can return to normal activities right away with some limitations – for example, avoid strenuous activity for the first 24 hours and avoid rubbing or massaging the injected muscles.

Botox Results

Following Botox injections, you may experience mild redness and swelling at the injection site, which will resolve quickly. For best results, we recommend avoiding consuming alcohol and spending time out in the sun for 24-46 hours after treatment. Depending on the patient and the area treated, results can usually be seen 3-7 days after treatment, with peak results after two weeks. Most people can enjoy their Botox results for 3-5 months before another treatment is needed.
